Things are heating up in the world of smart phones as the diversity increases and companies find further ways to sharpen their specialties to present their products as genuine challengers for the crown of the smart phone world. Many have speculated that Apple might just be able to be knocked from the top of the tree, but others point out that it depends on how hard the competition is willing to climb to get to them. This means that specialist phones are now hitting the shelves and display cases around the world which can present a very strong challenge to iPhone, the current king of the roost, and that as more of these phones arrive it could be only a matter of time before the giant is tilted a bit too far and topples over. The analysts who keep watch over the emerging smart phone market have long predicted a challenger, but these days it has come to seem as if the pure brand domination of Apple’s name alone might just be enough to keep them highly competitive for years to come. The arrival of new smart phones in the past month, however, might just be adjusting that picture to put these other companies in a brand new light. Among the competitors is LG which is known for their ability to innovate with an impressive product offering mix that aims at different segments of the smart phone consumer base in order to provide a host of options for buyers who have been fence sitting when it comes to mobile phones.

With the brand new LG Pop recently unveiled, many analysts are touting its low cost as a real challenge to iPhone which has traditionally been the choice of consumers who have more to spend. The Pop is willing to sacrifice some features in order to keep prices low and this could be a powerful lure for many.

Can Samsung Wave Drown the Competition?

Many in the mobile phone market already know that the days of a simple cell phone are long gone and today consumers demand a host of features that the iPhone from Apple made into an absolute must have. Web surfing software packages, touch screens, cameras and even video camcorders are rapidly becoming the true industry standard for consumers at all levels so phones that do not offer these features are likely to be over looked by all but those who are seeking a dirt cheap alternative to the smart phone. This smart phone industry has recently become an arena for battles on a gladiatorial level that Ancient Rome would have admired with mega corporations bringing to market amazing pieces of technical wizardry that only a few short years ago would have sounded like pure magic. The battle has heated up recently with the arrival of a new competitor that has traditionally given Apple some competition, but nowhere near the level they now face from this Korean company.

Those in the analyst field are saying that the Apple iPhone holds such strong sway over the consumer market that it would be tough for any company to ease in side ways, but some critics are actually coming to a change of heart after seeing the Samsung Wave in action. With DivX and XviD support coming standard on the Wave, it looks as if Samsung has gotten deadly serious about not taking a back seat in the race for market domination of the smart phone industry. There are a host of features that used to be iPhone exclusives which the Wave is bringing to bear, giving consumers yet another choice in the world of smart phones that will allow them to find the perfect device for their needs. Competitors, however, fully expect an iPhone strike back quite soon.

Mobile Dating App Unveils Live Chat Feature

The mobile dating app Are You Interested? from software development company SNAP Interactive has recently revealed that their popular dating app will now be hosting live chat to help singles connect more easily with one another through their iPhones. The chat functionality will enable users to make use of a GPS feature that helps them interact with those in their local area. Not only will users be able to make use of the chat rooms provided, but they can also screen other users by specifics such as age range or sexual orientation. In addition, users may initiate private chat conversations with specific users of their choosing.

By incorporating the use of other platforms such as Facebook and the Are You Interested? website, this app expands user’s dating range to up to 14 million people with an estimated 2.5 million users online at any given time from more than 170 countries around the world. The site sets an impressive record of user time logged per session, as well, with most staying an average of 16 minutes per login. During the beta phase alone, more than thirty thousand messages flew through the chat rooms as users quickly embraced the new feature.

The addition of location based screening of users is expected to send the service a massive boom in users.

AT&T Offering Free Wireless Access Across the US

According to reports AT&T is currently offering free wireless access to iPhone users at many of its public hot spots. These spots include many Starbucks across the nation which currently boasts more than 7,000 stores in the United States. iPhone users are given a specially formatted page when they launch the Safari browser. They are then presented with a form that will ask them to enter the iPhone phone number and once this number is verified users can browse using AT&T’s hot spot rather than the slower EDGE based data network that AT&T typically uses. Details about this access are still mostly unreported and when last confronted AT&T refused to comment on the service. It is still undetermined whether the WI-FI access is unlimited or is available at all of AT&T’s hot spots which totals more than 70,000 including Barnes & Noble stores and the highly popular McDonald’s fast food chain.

Apple to Unlock iPhone in Italy?

It has been reported that Apple is agreeing to allow Telecom Italia Mobile sell unlocked iPhones without the typically mandatory two-year contract. This move is expected to be much more appreciated by Italian iPhone users who are among the largest number of prepaid service plan users. The unlocked iPhone will also be usable with other carriers besides Telecom Italia. TIM will however still retain the right to sell the iPhone exclusively for the first six months after its release. This is expected to catapult the iPhone in Italy but the cost will be much more expensive due to the agreement.

3G iPhone Expected in June

Walt Mossberg, Wall Street Journal gadget reviewer reported last week at the Bleep.TV Executive Summit in Washington that Apple will definitely release the much anticipated 3G iPhone in just sixty more days. This makes the launch date for this already highly popular iPhone to be set in June, which has already previously been noted as the expected launch date. The WWDC 08 begins on June 9 and the anticipated iPhone 2.0 software as well as the SDK launch is expected in June as well. With the expected launch of the new 3G iPhone also planned to take place in June, consumers can expect quite a splash of activity from Apple over the next few weeks.

Another iPhone Exploit?

There may be another potentially dangerous iPhone/iPod Touch exploit ready to affect both the iPhone and iPod Touch – many units may be affected running firmware versions between 1.0.2 up to 1.1.3. This means that if this is confirmed, owners of the newly launched 16GB iPhone and 32GB iPod Touch will also be affected.
At the moment, it is difficult to say if this is some exaggerated bug or if there is a real cause for concern and it is also debateable whether this exploit is simply a nuisance or whether it will cause any real damage.
The exploit is said to be similar to the TIFF (Image) exploit which Apple was prompt to patch up. When the iPhone/iPod user browses onto a site containing the malicious code, a memory-intensive process is triggered and this causes the device to crash.
Apple is yet to issue a fix which raises doubts as to how severe the exploit is likely to be. However, concerned users can, for the time being, disable JavaScript in Safari which should keep their devices safe although by doing so, they will have to compromise on their browsing experience.
